community singing & improvising vocal groups
(Vancouver & North Vancouver)

Simple enough for beginners and still fun for experienced singers, Kate's non-auditioned community singing classes are the perfect way to bring more vocalizing into your life. A bit of music reading skill is a help but really not necessary as audio examples are also supplied. These groups are the perfect fit for anyone who wants to sing AND swing!

Or perhaps you are interested in vocal improvising that moves beyond the boundaries of 'singing'? The VOXYmusic Community Improv group might be for you. Scroll down past the choirs to the Improvised Singing section.

VOXYmusic, the Vancouver-based improvising group workshop series, was founded in 2007 by singer/performers Kate Hammett-Vaughan and Carol Sawyer. VOXYmusic’s mission is to celebrate the human voice, and to inspire singers of various musical and cultural traditions to explore a meeting place that is based in improvisation.
Workshops are led by professionals from the music, dance, theatre, spoken word and visual art realms, creating a space for singers with a wide variety of musical backgrounds and levels of experience to experiment, take risks, and extend their vocabulary as improvising performers.

VOXYmusic is a no-budget/self-funded community group. With the generous help of Vancouver Community College, grunt gallery, Playwrights Theatre Centre, and The Western Front, VOXYmusic has facilitated seven highly successful seasons of workshops that investigate vocal improvisation.
The workshop series often culminates in a very casual workshop/performance of small and large-group pieces that are created by workshop participants. It is fun to put together all of our ideas in a slightly formalized setting. Participation in the performance is not obligatory. We hope you will come because you have found the workshops interesting and fun.

No problem. We know people are busy. Come when you can.
Do I need to practice between sessions?
A bit of practice won’t hurt, but we sing and learn each session.
Is there a recital or a performance?
Yes! At the end of each season (fall and spring) we meet for a very informal and fun recital/performance at a local East Vancouver venue. You can invite a guest or two to come along! If performing is not your thing, please don't stress. We put the emphasis on having fun, and it is not compulsory.

VOXYmusic FAQ

What if I am not a professional singer?
You don't need to be a professional. You just need to want to sing and explore your voice.
What do I bring to the workshop?
A bottle of water and $5. Please wear comfortable clothes that you can move and breathe in. Sometimes we use the floor for exercises, so it should be something you are OK with for sitting or moving on the floor.
What if I can't make it to every workshop?
Not a problem. Come to any workshop that you are available for.
Is there a performance at the end of the series?
Yes. We organize a very casual small event that allows us to experiment with the materials we have used. It's very lighthearted and fun, and not even slightly formal. Just a great way to wrap up and share our voices with each other. Family, friends, and other interested folk are welcome to come and watch. If you have not done all the workshops, you can still participate in the performance.
